THRIVE: eCom News - 14 Aug 2026
This week: Google’s Smart Bidding overhaul, Claude’s invisible watermarking and more.
Happy Friday!
Here's what you need to know this week across organic and paid that matters for your ecom store:
01 · Prompt volume is the second demand signal and some topics are 50x bigger there than keyword data suggests
What it means for you: a lot of category and content planning still runs off Keyword Planner, which now systematically understates the topics where customers describe a problem instead of typing a phrase; e.g. "best sofa for a small flat with a dog" isn't a keyword, but it's a real buying prompt with real volume behind it. Pull prompt volume alongside search volume before you sign off the Q4 content plan, as the prompt-strong / keyword-weak bucket is the one nobody in your category has looked at yet.
02 · Google's Smart Bidding overhaul lands 17 August: Target CPA and Target ROAS stop behaving the way you've built around
What it means for you: if your peak trading plan assumes current ROAS behaviour, you're planning on the old model not long away from BFCM (I know right) - benchmark CPA, ROAS and spend pacing by campaign this week so you can tell a rollout wobble from a genuine performance problem in September. Every previous bidding transition punished the accounts that panicked and re-targeted mid-change, not the ones that held their nerve and let the model settle.
03 · Claude now watermarks everything it writes invisibly, worldwide, and in every file it touches
What it means for you: the PDP copy, meta descriptions and blog drafts your team generates in Claude now carry a machine-readable mark that survives copy-paste, plus signed provenance data on generated images, and Anthropic is building the detection tooling for third parties to check it. The loophole is also the lesson, as heavy human editing degrades the mark, so the brands genuinely rewriting rather than shipping raw output are the ones who come out clean anyway.
What’s one thing you need to fix before we get to Peak + BF/CM? Hit reply and tell us, and we’re happy to offer any advice!
